Jad El Badaoui

Aerospace engineer working on computational engineering — CFD, multiphysics simulation, composite structures and high-performance computing.

  • BEng Aerospace Engineering — University of Bristol
  • Incoming MSc Advanced Computational Methods for Aeronautics, Flow Management and Fluid-Structure Interaction — Imperial College London
  • ANSYS Fluent · Abaqus · MATLAB · Python · C++ · SYCL · FPGA computing
  • Interested in aerospace, propulsion, CFD, simulation and numerical methods

The thread through the work below is caring about whether a result is trustworthy, not just whether it converged: separating verification from validation, checking numbers against hand calculations, and stating plainly what a model cannot tell you.

Featured work

Validated NACA 0012 aerodynamics and a one-way coupled wind-turbine fluid–structure interaction study, in ANSYS Fluent and Mechanical.

Surface $C_p$ agrees closely with NASA experimental data and integrated lift lands within 1.4 % of experiment. The turbine study maps a rotating-frame CFD pressure field onto an orthotropic composite shell; the root radial reaction checks against a hand calculation to 0.116 %. The power coefficient is reported as not converged, because it isn't.

Experimental, analytical and finite-element investigation of thin-ply quasi-isotropic and Double-Double laminates — final-year research project, supervised by Prof. Michael R. Wisnom.

Four 32-ply architectures manufactured and tested in unnotched tension, combined with a ply-by-ply 3D Abaqus free-edge model, Hashin first-ply-failure, O'Brien energy release rates and SEM fractography. The conclusion turns on multiple-comparison correction: most apparent differences between architectures do not survive it.

Design, manufacture and testing of the structural joints and aerodynamic fairings for a complete flight vehicle — 10 additively manufactured parts, 1,011 g.

Survived to 813 N, past the ultimate load case. It then failed by bolt shear-out through a 3D-printed clamp — a load path for which no reserve factor had been computed. That gap between what was analysed and what actually broke is the most useful thing in the repository, and it is written up rather than hidden.

Society work

🚀 Rocket Airbrake and Fin Aerodynamics — HyPower Bristol, EuRoC 2025

External aerodynamics for Project Waxwing, a student-built liquid rocket: a 25 case Star-CCM+ sweep of airbrake deployment against velocity, run to give the brake controller a real drag map rather than an assumed one, plus the section and planform selection for the composite fins.

Verified against a Prandtl-Schlichting boundary-layer calculation and cross-checked against a MATLAB panel method. No wind tunnel data was available, so it is reported as verified but not validated, and the modelling assumptions are listed rather than buried. Society work, so there is no public repository: read the case study.

In progress

FPGA clustering acceleration — performance engineering and FPGA-oriented optimisation of clustering algorithms in C++ with SYCL/DPC++ and Alpaka: loop-carried dependencies, irregular memory access and on-chip memory trade-offs. An independent demonstrator, not yet published here.

Each repository documents its own methods, verification, limitations and licence. Where work builds on tutorial material or a collaborator's data, it says so.
