As a paying user, the announcement that CoreFramework would be made available to the open-source community felt a little strange.
Shit, I paid for this, so what now? Does the support continue? Can I still hope that someone will help me if I need it?
To be honest, I haven't really needed any help so far. Everything worked out, or one of the many assistants had already helped me.
Regardless of the announcement that CF would be made available to the open-source community, I had already been thinking about what the consequences of AI might be. Either a software company closes its doors for good, or it reinvents itself.
Personally, AI has been more of an enrichment than a problem for me so far. I've had many ideas floating around in my head for a long time. I knew exactly what the solution should look like and what it needed to be capable of. I just wasn't able to implement them myself, because system integration is much more my world than software development. Now you can build so many things yourself — and they actually work really well.
AI makes many people more effective. I think that's a great thing.
As a child of the early 1980s, I have – despite getting into IT relatively late (1999) – already seen quite a few things come and go.
Looking back, one thing that has stuck with me is how local computer stores gradually disappeared, one by one.
It was pretty cool to be able to walk into a local store on a Friday evening, just before closing time, and buy some replacement thermal paste for the dried-out, way-too-old stuff in your PC.
No waiting for deliveries, no PayPal, no whatever. You could just get into your car or hop on your bike, walk into a store, and buy whatever you needed that same evening – and gaming night was saved.
I understand the move towards open source. Before something is doomed to disappear, you make it available to everyone. That way, the idea – and perhaps the product itself – can live on.
I know, this isn't an issue, but I couldn't help myself and had to type these few lines. Yes, I actually typed them myself – this really wasn't AI. :-)
